Default temp sensor blows at 11K miles

Was running my 2018 Q3 Quatro 2.0t (11K miles) kind of hard on paved back roads yesterday but nothing over 5000 RPM.
When I get home, my temp gauge is reading 0 and the engine area smells like something burned.
Took it to the dealer who tested it this morning and found that the coolant temperature sensor had
failed. It was replaced under warranty. The funny thing is that no warning indicators showed on the dash.
Service rep says "It happens" and said that the smell may have been over heated coolant.
The car runs fine but, it is alarming that no check engine type indicator showed and that a part that young could fail.

Thoughts? Part of the Audi Experience? Scary.

I might also add that the shifter was not in "S" mode.

Two problems with your service rep's diagnosis. First, how can coolant in a sealed system have a smell? Second, how can a failed temp sensor "cause" overheating? All it does is pass the message on to the appropriate controllers
