Is there a “break in” period for new brakes?
I’m ready to buy a dealer certified 2017 Audi Q3 with 35k miles. The dealer says they replaced the brakes already. When I drove the car, the braking was not “soft”....it felt kind of grindy. They told me that’s normal on new Audi brakes. Seems odd to me. Is there a break in period before they smooth out?
thanks!

Pelay, could there have been rust built up on the rotors from sitting outside for a long period?
Things should smooth out quickly with new parts...no extended break-in period should be needed.

Not really a "break in" period per se, but brakes should be bedded for optimal performance. There are procedures to do that. It involves repeatedly slowing down the car from around 60 mph to heat up the brakes and initiate a controlled pad material transfer onto the rotor. This will build up a thin even layer of pad material on the rotor to make the brakes perform optimally. I also echo the above response, if the car has been sitting outside and hasn't been driven in a while depending on where you live, then it's very possible that a layer of rust started to build on the rotors. That's normal and the rust will wear off quickly with normal braking or you can take it on an empty road and do a few hard stops to accelerate the process.
