3G max speed on wi-fi?
 

What max speeds are you observing on your MMI 3G connection over wi-fi? I ran a quick test and got 1.5 Mbps download and 3.1 Mbps upload, which is somewhat odd, however, this was done inside a garage, so possibly too much interference in the way. Will have to try it again in an open area with a good signal...

Not sure what our exact speeds were when we had it, but it was super slow. We didn't keep it active

Reports around the forums are that the Audi Connect 3G wifi hotspot is very slow. Not too useful, especially if trying to stream media from the internet.

The measured speed is "slow as balls" -- I have to remember to turn off wifi when I get in the car and want to stream from Rdio because LTE is sooooo much faster than in-car wifi.

I am actually pleasantly surprised with the 1.5 Mbps rate. I was expecting worse. This should be sufficient for audio streaming and basic web browsing, assuming good coverage/signal of course. Granted, T-Mobile's coverage isn't particularly good.

In my garage I get 2.5 down & about the same up. However - connection speed is dependent on so many variables that comparing individual tests doesn't really prove much - except that T-Mobile 3G is miserably slow (compared to AT&T & Verizon LTE). Your location in relation to the cell site, current level of traffic on the site, any RF interference in the area, etc., etc. all influence connection speed. The only constant is that T-Mobile can only move data so (not very) fast.
Interestingly, I recently had the cellular modem in my Q7 replaced to accommodate T-Mobile's system "upgrade" here in the Chicago area & I seem to get a little faster loading of Google maps, info, etc. - or maybe it's just my hopeful imagination. We don't do any media streaming, but my wife does e-mail, web browsing, etc & it's definitely useable.

As long as the lower right says "3G" and not "2G" my kids have no problem watching YouTube, streaming Netflix, surfing, etc.

The speedtest app always overstates the speed. On my Verizon phone, it gets fast response and it says 15MB, when I feel it a bit slow (not very slow), I see it 3MB/s

I can say traveling across western Kansas with 3 bars of 3G it's so slow it won't even update the Waze app and we turned it off and used Verizon instead. So in most cases it's not even worth "free" unless you're in a large city with good coverage and then it is adequate for basic things.

I just tested wi-fi speed with my tablet after (finally!) getting a T-mobile SIM from our family plan to work in the Q7. I got 3.75 Mbit down, 3.5 Mbit up (using speedtest).

Watching some large app updates go through, the throughput was ~400 kbit (ish) which roughly matches this speed. The latency is also very low too! I was impressed, and don't doubt I could stream Netflix or youtube over it.

At first I thought 3G data wasn't included as data usage, as maybe they only charged for 4G LTE, but I checked the account the next day and the usage was shown. Ah well.

Note this is for the older MMI 3G+ systems. Newer cars are going AT&T 4G and the above doesn't apply to those.

I got 2.3Mb download and 1.2Mb upload at my house. It's At&t service. My daughter can watch netflix and youtube once it's loaded without problem when we're driving around. This sim is sharing with my mobile data plan so I'm only paying $10/month.

I just started using the TruPhone SIM (coming from AT&T), it feels faster! =)

I'm hopeful that they'll be a way to retrofit the 4G once it comes out, but I imagine it's going to be far harder than I think.

I let my subscription lapse after the 6-mo. Period because our 4G coverage on phones is much faster.

The only thing that stinks is not getting Google maps on the MMI, but it's not necessary.
That, and I hate looking down and seeing 2G staring at me.

I'm driving up to get the Audi connect activated in my wife's new Q3 and I'm anxious to see if it's going to be 3G or 4G.

speed test are usually not that accurate as most ISP will give you higher sustained BW for the first 1-2 minutes, then they throttled you back.

thus speed test see the first "sweet spot" bw and not the sustained long term average which is what we feel

In the US, by special allowance from the ITU, "4G" is not really 4G. It is usually HSPDA or some form of "enhanced" 3G.
It is also totally different from "4G LTE" which conforms to different standards.

In order to make an older system "upgrade" to 4G LTE (and 5G has been under development for some time now) you'd have to change the radio communications module in the car, which I believe in installed under the front passenger seat in the floor.

This would not be a cheap swap, even if Audi does make equipment available. A software upgrade simply can't do it.

Our LTE coverage on our phone did better anyway, and unlimited data through Sprint makes it a non-issue for me. The only real drawback is it getting to utilize the Google maps overlay function. But the basic map is cleaner most of the time anyway.

I remember reading an article about when planes went to GPS map tracking. They tried a bunch of configurations, one of the being a full on map like Google maps offers, and that was actually far more distracting to pilots than the standard "non-features" map they ended up using.
