Default adaptive lights error code

I have a 2015 TDI Q5 Prestige with adaptive lights. The warning light came on today, looks like a big repair to pull off the front bumper, pull out the lighting unit and hope there is a break in the wiring harness that can be repaired. If not the I think the unit needs to be replaced. Any idea how much I'm looking at and if there any options? I drive a lot of twisty back roads at night and the lights are great.

Potholes cause many adaptive headlight error codes. Did the warning light ever turn off?
Do the lights do all the normal calisthenics when starting to test all the movements?
Do a scan and clear any codes and see if it stays good.

When I repaired the lens on our headlight and replaced the ballast, the car continued to display a warning until we used VCDS to do the adjustment. If you do need to remove the headlight assembly, it can be done without removing the bumper, but it means removing the 3 bolts attaching the fender and carefully coaxing the assembly out. You will scratch the lens if you are not cautious so be careful. The adaptive headlights are held in place by a simple plastic knuckle (one horizontal, one vertical IIRC). Maybe yours got bumped enough to get popped out of place.
