Aftermarket wheels - Which brand?
I would like to get 19" or 20" wheels for my Q5... Beside Hartmann, which brand is good (fitment, quality, ..) and reasonably priced?
Also, is the difference between 8.5" and 9" very noticable (I will mount 255 tires on them)? 19x9 doesn't seem very commun.

You may want to set a budget first since quality and price usually go together
With that said, I know some forum members have used TSW, VMR and BBS wheels (just off the top of my head and I'm sure there are many more). Look for wheels that use bolt pattern 5x112 (similar to A4) and a CB (center bore) of 66.56 ... From there, just find something that you like the looks (or performance) of and go from there...
As for wheel width, just factor it in when calculating the offset. These will ultimately determine how flush (or not flush) the wheel sits within the wheel arches. Also watch for the backspacing when going with wider wheels & tires since the front suspension is fairly close to the tire already in stock form. Wheel width will affect the offset used and the weight of the wheel (more material = more weight); it may also affect the concavity of the wheel or if there is a wheel lip, the depth of the lip.
This calculator will be helpful in determining the sizes that will fit:

Good luck!

Regarding my question about 9" versus 8.5", it was related to the look. Somebody recommended me to get 9" instead of 8.5". But since the difference will only be .25" on each side, I'm wondering if it will noticable.

Stock wheels I believe are low-pressure cast, so something like VMR or Hartmann would be comparable. Different casting methods will yield different combination of weight and strength. In a very high level, gravity cast < low-pressure cast < forged. There are more sub-divisions but that's the general consensus.
Tire Rack has a pretty decent tech page explaining the differences:

Here is a link to VMR: http://www.velocitymotoring.com/
They are a vendor on this site so I'm sure they can help you with fitment and pricing.

Hartmann also has a similar model, check their gallery with them on a Q5:

I would like to spend a most $1200 for a set. Is it enough to get something comparable in quality and performance to stock wheels?

I read here that a user went with the Hartmann instead of the VMR mainly because it was possible to fit the Audi center cap on the Hartmann. Audi center cap won't fit on VMR? What is different?
