I have failed for the following reason - No display zone with Zone 1 HVAC is activated at group 058. I dont have the comfort HVAC module (3 zone).
Display group number 058
Display zones 1 … 4
Information on ambient air quality and on automatic recirculated air function received from data bus system.
- The air quality sensor -G238- is connected to the onboard power supply control unit -J519-. The -J519- converts the information into data signals and sends them over the data bus system to the Climatronic control unit -J255-.
- The display zone is only assigned for a comfort air conditioner. With a basic air conditioner no air quality sensor -G238- is fitted.
J Display zone 1: Air pollution measured by the -G238- (at readout 00 no air pollution is measured).
J Display zone 2: Preset sensitivity of the -G238- (the basic setting 2 can be changed depending on the Climatronic control unit -J255- via the adaption function in adaption channel 28).

J Display zone 3: NOx (nitrogen oxide) content in air measured by -G238-.
J Display zone 4: CO (carbon monoxide) content in air measured by -G238-.
J The measured values of the air quality sensor -G238- are indicated in the measured value block of the onboard power supply control unit -J519- (CU 09 measured value blocks 73 and 74).

If there is a way to enable display zones, then this should be done by a programming expert who will charge for this activation.

My project comes to an end. Not working unless 3 zone HVAC is also retrofitted or an add on parameter is offered by a diagnostic (e.g. Vag Can Pro). Should be easier for me to upgrade to 3 zone (I think I will take the risk)

This info was more of an academic type/a research project.

I was interested for the same retrofit, also for the fact that I changed the FL panel -(3 zones) - and now the first error is related to this G238 missing sensor.
As a workaround until I will figure it out - I installed the supplementary filter that is used for Mexic & China only due to the massive polution - cabin filter for 2009 Audi A4L 2.0L / B8 Air-conditioned OEM:8KD819441.

Very detailed write up! Great work! Thank you

You are welcome. Nice to see that the information I have posted is of help to someone else apart from me

Please in the future post your codings in order to solve the 3 Zone sensors errors (upgrade from 1 zone)?? You are one step ahead of me. It was a pity to find out that the HVAC 1 zone does not support air quality sensor.

Will order mine in Christmas time, (need to fix my rear door not locking when cold first) but did not decide if I should get a facelift or the prefacelift 3 zone version. I think there are some graphical visual differences. Prefacelift will be easier to code.

Read following 1 and 2 and try to understand and report after testing. some settings are for facelift HVAC. You have to enter coding you had for 1 zone, I believe. Then if your HVAC 3 zone is from facelift and your car was prefacelift you add 00 at the end. Then you do corrections as below + corrections for Air quality sensor.

If that works please let us know. Hope it does because I have no other info to fix the issue. Ordered a FL HVAC 3 zone too but without heated seats option.

1.

Anyway, here is the correct coding:
- Enter Address 08: Auto HVAC (J255) - Select coding (don't use the longcoding helper yet)
- Copy the coding from the old airco unit to the new one. (Copy it from a vcds scan) - Then go to Byte 1, bit 4 (deselect MMI 3G display) Go to Adaption:
Channel 79: change from 1 to 0. This changes the LIN-Bus from the blower unit from new to old generation. This is why the fan control speed doesn't work as many people describe.
Channel 35: change 0 to 1 if no humidity sensor is installed.
Channel 85: change from 0 to 1 (VFL/FL related) Now the unit will work okay and will generate no errors. Side effects: You lose the visual presentation on the center display if you have Radio Concert/Chorus or MMI 2G. Your seat heating has instead of 6 just 3 settings. Not a very big problem. 3 is the equivalent of 6 warmth wise. If you have MMI 3G it will function 100% correctly (so with the full visuals) but then skip "Then go to Byte 1, bit 4 (deselect MMI 3G display)" And ofcourse you need the CP removed with a VAS connection.

2..
I did the adaptation for the 1-zone climate control on A4 B8 as it is described above, I copied the coding from the old non-FL one to the new FL-one and then did the adaptation on channel 79 and it works like a charm. btw the old coding had only 4 bytes and the new one needed 5, so for the last byte I just coded it to 00: 64020000 -> 6402000000. I have symphont radio so I didn't lose the visual presentation (skipped this step "Then go to Byte 1, bit 4 (deselect MMI 3G display)")

The problem with HVAC is that we don't have the security access code.

Wait, Mexico and China get super air filters, and we can't even get pine-scented ones in the US?
We're being sold cars with inferior air filters?
Oh, I must tell Donald about this. He's not going to like hearing that America is getting inferior German cars.

I might try this HVAC filter in the future: 8KD819441 if my HVAC upgrade fails.

3 zone facelift HVAC arrived for testing.
RHD PN:8k2820043BA firmware 122 H04 (facelift MY 2015)

For LHD the PN is different.

Will try to code with CP to see what faults I get. Item looks like new. I guess I need luck for making this retrofit work.

My tests and my faults after coding.
The main problem I had is that there is no HVAC display working (HVAC screen does not light up). Is this part of component protection?? Anyone to confirm this? e.g. If I remove CP will HVAC screen light up? I can live with the faults if HVAC will be fully functional.

Could not perform any basic settings (most probably due to missing components temperature sensors and flap actuators). A pain to replace these.

@mgbyte do you have the same problem?? @spijun any experience with this?
Tests showing that Air Quality Sensor is fully supported:

Faults after coding:
Address 08: Auto HVAC Labels: NONE
Control Module Part Number: 8K2 820 043 BA HW: 8K2 820 043 BA
Component and/or Version: KLIMA 3 ZONEN H04 0122
Software Coding: 6405000000
11 Faults Found too from missing components.
