Audi A5 extra key

I only have one key for my 2014 Audi A5. I called the dealer they stated its about 400 for the purchase of the key then about another 160 to program the key. Ive had some say to purchase the key myself online and then pay to program the key. But ive also read where sometimes they key purchased may not be operable. Wanted to get some insights for the 2014 model and is it best to just go through the dealership due to the complexity of these things?

Unfortunately, Audi has imposed strong security measures to ensure that grey market and used key fobs cannot be re-used on other cars regardless of what others say. Your only solution is to purchase a new key fob from a dealer and have them cut and program it for your car. Audi dealers hook up their VAG terminal to your car so the new key can be registered with Audi via the internet. There is no other way around it. I am not sure whether the lost key fob can or will be disabled. Maybe upon request?

If you have several Audi dealers close to you, you may want to shop around for who gives you the best offer for the key fob and programming services. Labour rates are lower in some locations/areas especially outside the city.

A question to all...

When you bought your Audi, did it come with:
- 2 FOB
- 1 Master Key

?

2 FOB and 1 Emergency Key (plastic). The Emergency Key Shell is in a holster in the glove box. My emergency key is kept at home. Some people keep it in their wallets. Not sure how it fits in their wallets though without getting bowed. Do not leave this key in the glove box. thieves will use it to steal your car.

I put my plastic key in a 'stick on' hide a key since I couldn't find a spot for a magnetic one....Turns out if fell off some where...$70 for a replacement + $150 to get all three reprogrammed.

I chose not do do the wallet thing since it is plastic and can bend or not bend and bit me in the butt..Gotta find a spot where I can put a hide a key where I won't fall off again..Never had that issue with a magnetic one in 40yrs of driving..

Thank you very much that clears everything up

Got the case, no plastic key.

Anyone hide their plastic key underneath their car should you lose your fob when out somewhere? Good or bad idea?
