Depending on usage, you may end up spending more than the $15/mo (effective) you can get through the "official" SIM. But if you're a light user (especially if you rarely have the Google Earth overlay active) then yes you'd be saving money with a prepaid provider. Just comes down to how much data the system would be pulling down each month and how much that would cost from various prepaid plans.

The Truphone sim card is the way to go, at least for me. Since T-mobile is the server you retain all of the functionality of the original card. It costs about $30 but it comes with a $15 credit. After 3 months with occasional use, 3-4 times a month, I still have a $14 credit. Bottom line it depends on how often you use it. Truphone charges 9 cent per MB.

If you are a light user Truphone is the way to go. I average about $4 per month based on my usage. The $15 per month unlimited plan is nice but for me I couldn't bring myself to pay for data that I wasn't going to use.

^^ Besides being too much trouble IMO, you can't make/receive calls and you'll never receive text messages that are sent to you while the SIM is in the car.
