That 3M stuff should be the same stuff their installers use. How it compares to anything else, I wouldn't know. The 3M stuff isn't intended to be a "scratch guard" so it should be simple for someone to build a more scratch-resistant material. (Simple.(G)
Of course the thicker plastic or stainless plates that stick to the bumper are really the way to go for protection if you're planning to slide heavy things in and out regularly. They'll stop tears from luggage feet & such, that a film wouldn't.

That's basically a piece of body side molding, contoured at both ends instead of being cut from a roll. Probably the best way to protect the bumper from being bumped. Or you could look into 2" wide body side molding and ends caps, or trimming it as you prefer.

Yeh, in terms of a product that would be protecting the top of the bumper (and lip): I had already reviewed all of those on eBay, I've just been afraid that the automatic rear gate closing won't work with those. Someone with a 14' Q5 (same as mine) complained of just this happening when he purchased one off of Amazon (see the "questions" section here):

That looks great, but maybe not quite as good on my brilliant black. did you purchase it online? if so, can you send me the link? thanks.

I actually purchased it from a fellow on Craigslist, but have seen similar ones on eBay for sale. It looks great on the white Q5, but not sure it will look as good on black.

Bumper paint protector - Rearguards by RGM - Q5 Audi
It's now available in silver, brushed alloy and carbon fiber, too. I like the black fine, but I would have like to have seen the brushed alloy option.

That link didn't work? I'll try again.
