Careful your Keyfob is telling secrets.
 

Just thought I'd relate an experience I had today that I found interesting,then again I'm old and easily amused.
Went to my Audi dealer to get my dieselgate "loyalty" Mastercard activated.Woopee - too bad the dealer doesn't have a bar ! Had to provide various docs.to prove ownership and then the custrep.asked for my key which he dropped onto a small round tray.He then started talking about my current mileage, service records etc.I asked him and he explained that all this info is stored in the keyfob.Just thought you'd find this interesting.

BMW has been doing it for a long time now. For some reason the key fob readers really never made it into Audi service departments.

I've seen this with our BMW. The SA's put the fob into the reader and need very little information from me. This past winter I stopped into the dealer to check the tire pressures (it was sub zero outside) and to top off the tires they still ran the key fob info.

My local dealership has it too.

Peculiar that this would (apparently) be totally optional among dealers and not standardized. They always need to turn on my car and read the odometer.

Do you have an Advance Key, memory seats, if not, probably a no go...............

Yes, memory seats, key1/key2 sensing and setting in the car, and still, never seen or heard of such a thing at the dealer. One of the dealers that doesn't read anything from my fob keeps over well 500 vehicles in stock, they're not a lightweight operation.

I never heard of the FOB data scanning either. I need to go to the dealer someday for the PCV valve recall and will ask about this.

I know some dealers are using commercial systems that put either a bar code label or an RFI sticker in the car, and then they manually link that to their database so they bring up data on the car. But hadn't heard of anything actually "interrogating" the car.

Except of course, something like GM's OnStar, which could do that in 1995. (Or, in 2011, for anyone.)

Is it even possible to "read" an Audi odometer over the OBD port ?? (I have no idea.)

I guess they used one of these. When I worked at BMW it was cool except for one thing. We couldn't move the customer cars out of the service drive until the service advisor was done with the key which led to some back ups in the drive. The key read allowed all of the service paperwork to be pre-filled with the car's info.
