Headlight Upgrade

Headlight Upgrade
I am wanting to upgrade my headlights in my 2011 Audi Q5 3.2 Premium Plus. They are currently stock but would like to have the brightest lights possible. I have tried to do some research but do not really know what I am looking for, LEDs or HIDs, if I need a conversion kit or not, which brands to go with. Any suggestions?

There are older threads on this.
To "do it right" you will need to replace the entire headlamp assemblies along with light ballasts and any other electronics that support them. You can't just drop in bright bulbs. HID capsules, LED emitters, and tungsten(etc) bulbs all have very different physical shapes, and require very different reflector assemblies in order to work properly.
Yes, you can throw something "brighter" in anything, but you'll make plenty of heat and glare and accomplish very little else.
Daniel Stern has a very good rep. If you want more light--ask him about adding 7" or 8" big round driving lights in front of the car. Those can use different bulbs, and put the stock lighting (all of it) to shame. Although the really good stuff is often illegal for road use.

I used these guys for many years for "Halogen" bulbs, they sell European bulbs that are street legal in the US. Use the same wattage as the OEM bulb, and are designed and focused properly to use the OEM headlamp assemblies.
The Osram Night Breakers and Philips Extra Vision worked well for me in my prior 2, A4's.
I don't know why they don't list the Q5 under Audi, but an email should clear that up.

Stock a 2011 Premium Plus 3.2 (or 2.0t for that matter) has HID headlights. Unless there is something wrong, they are pretty good. Maybe fresh bulbs would help if they are dim. You could retrofit the headlight assemblies, re-code and probably a Kufatec wire harness for the Prestige model adaptive HID that turn with your steering. Pretty pricey and rare unless you get lucky at a scrap yard. They would need to be 2012 or older to fit.

If they are anything like the HID in my 2015, I don; think there's much way to improve it without adding supplemental lighting. You can't make the reflector bigger. Any more wattage and you'll melt the plastic covers. If you go to LED, you would need new reflectors to get proper projection.
Best bet might be adding driving lights on the lower grill section or something. Mounted low, they light the roadway further than fog lamps, but without glare to oncoming drivers since they are low.

motoguy128 I share your opinion. It's not as simple as many think. The best augmentation is through supplemental lighting. My first step would be to check out the current aiming. My 14 which has xenons is certainly satisfactory.
