reading through the owners manual, it specifically has mounting points for the OEM rails only.
and then states - any other type used may effect warranty.

meh.
I have a Thule rack from my other car that just needs the aero foot pack adapters for the Q, which is way more economical as I can keep my wind deflector and current arrangement of bike and wheel trays as opposed to buying adapters for every attachment for the OEM rails.

has anyone used Thule/Yakima/whatever with success on their Q?

I have used Yakima racks without issue. All I had to do was call Yakima and they provided the adapters for Audi (with the hard points that fit into the Audi rails) free of charge.

Sorted. Needed a new Thule fit kit, which wasn’t cheap - buut cheaper than adapters for the trays and wheel holders.
