Very true.

I went to the Dealer thinking I’d be driving home in a SQ5 or putting a downpayment on one. I came home with a TDI Premium Plus with Tow, Tech, B&O and 20” Wheel Package. The only thing I didn’t get that I wanted was the Sport Interior. The trade off for me was the lower price, better MPG and more Torque than the SQ.

Agreed. I started by looking at Prestige 3.0T models and thought about the SQ5. The TDI was in the middle of the price range of those two used models. The MPG is much much better and believe me that gas prices are going to be way up this summer. The power band of the TDI isn't as exciting as the 3.0T but the torque is so perfect for towing i loved it.

You guys make some great points that I appreciate very much! Maybe I should repose the question... If I'm spending $30K on an SUV but want something fun to drive and not as concerned for towing but need reliable, what model or SUV should I consider?

for $30k I would buy another Mazda CX-5. Fun to drive and definitely reliable. In 60k miles I've had to do just standard maintenance. Total cost of that maintenance has been less than $1000 and that is mostly just tires.

Interesting point but I'd prefer something with some "spunk" to it. I like the additional HP the Q5 provides along with the upgrade interior. I looked at the Macan as well but found the shift points in the Q5 3.0 to be smoother as well as the overall ride.
