Default Potential Buyer

I've been interested in purchasing a used Q5 -- probably a 2013/2014 3.0T. Any suggestions?

1. I've seen Q5's both from dealers and non-dealers. I'd rather purchase from a dealer so I can get it Certified Pre-Owned, but you also pay for the privilege. For the extra amount I think I could get a third-party warranty. Others have said just to make sure you seriously stick to the maintenance schedule. This can be somewhat confusing and the reason why I'd prefer a 2014 in warranty to make sure all recall and covered issues are taken care of.

2. I have an iPhone 6s and it looks like Carplay wasn't introduced until 2016. Any good suggestions for the best integration? As far as I can tell there is a special MMI cable for audio/video, but I'm not sure what will and won't work on it.

3. Should I pay a 3rd party audi mechanic to come with me to look at potential candidates whether or not it's from a dealer?

4. I hear people love the TDI (despite the emissions issues). I've only seen one around here and the price diff is about $7000 over the price of the 3.0T. Worth it? What are the issues with buying a TDI at this point?

Thanks for your input. I really love the interiors and general handling on these. Hope I can make it work long-term.

13 was when they went from the 3.2 to the 3.0 supercharged.
Except for the TDI, 14 is pretty much the same as the 13.
Try for a Certified Pre-Owned because of the warr.

Re: TDI
Your additional outlay of $7k is lessened by cash back if you were to buy now. It's a long, long, long explanation that can be found at the EPA thread here, at TDI club or Club Touareg. Suffice to say the car itself is dynamite! Worth a hard look if you found a nice specimen.
