Real World MPG for the TDI.....?
I'm in the market for a low mileage 2015 Q5 TDI and I've read journalist reviews online who claim to get up to 34-35 MPG (Highway) with the TDI. I've searched back through 9 pages on this forum and cannot find a thread related to the real world MPG everyone is experiencing with this engine.
So what is everybody getting in town and on the highway with their TDI's.......thanks in advance for your input! |
Yes, it will deliver that on a highway trip. You can see my overall average below, and if you go thru my fill-up history (click on fuelly icon) there will be some high MPG when I make a road trip.

Perfect, that's exactly the type of info I was looking for!

And here is mine (below). I drive around 95% rural and highway miles. |
Location is as important to consider as driving style and other issues. When I lived in Wisconsin the experience with my 2014 MY Prestige was closer to Dennis Mitchell's. I have lived in suburban Phoenix for the past three years and now my calculated average of approximately 33 mpg in mixed use driving is similar to Dennis' best ever, and Mythdoc's average. The move to Arizona resulted in an improvement of nearly 5 mpg. I attribute that to a different fuel mix (no winter blend), warmer temperatures, higher-speed driving with less stopping and longer trips. Perhaps the drier air is a factor as well. I have not had the emissions fix performed yet, which you also need to take into consideration.

I get 28.5 mpg in mixed city/hwy driving. Computer says closer to 30 mpg.

@JKOlson Good to know what your averages are. Agreed, I think that MPG is certainly location dependent. I lived in Scottsdale from 2000 until 2016, before moving to Sarasota. While there I consistently got higher MPG than other places I visited for extended periods of time (typically up north, it's just the style of driving for that region. In Sarasota, I'm rarely on a freeway unless we are headed to Tampa/St. Pete, otherwise it's just around town driving. Was considering a '15 Q7 TDI, but really leaning toward to Q5.
Thanks for the input. |
Just bought a 2014 Q5 TDI w/20" wheels (I think these largest/heavier wheels with wider tires will get worse MPG).
Driving highway from FL to CT, indicated MPG was 33.1 (going between 65 and 85, with locally higher gusts <ahem>). :) No idea yet how indicated MPG stacks up with actual since I've not refueled yet. |

I get 37 - 39 on the highway and 30 around town. This is my fifth VW / Audi TDI and I'm pretty gentle on the throttle. Highway range is 750+ miles.
Amazing vehicle. |
