Recommendations on VAG-COM cable
I know it's been mentioned here and there before, but I just wanted to know which cable you have, where you bought it, how much you spent, and how reliable it is. I heard from a number of people who ordered cables only to realize it didn't work or it only worked once or twice before crapping out. So before I plunk down some cash, it'd be nice to share this info for me and others in the community as well. Thanks!

The original VAG-COM cable is by RossTech. http://store.ross-tech.com/shop/VCHUC.html
It works fine for me and have never had issues, but I've only used it about a dozen times over the last 8 months.
When i was looking to buy the cable I did find some real cheap knock-offs but a lot of people on these forums advised me to stay clear of them.

I bought the one from Ross Tech also. It came very quick and I have had no problems. I would stay away from the cheap cables. It is silly to take a chance on a $40-50K vehicle to save a hundred bucks or so.

I'm new to the whole VAGCOM thing too.
If we buy the Ross-Tech cable, we don't need to purchase additional software or a license or anything of that nature, correct? We just download the VCDS software from the site, for free, and use it on a laptop?
And are we certain that this will work flawlessly with the 2012 Q5, or should we wait for a guinea pig to test it out?

Well, Ross-Tech is a well established company and if they say it works, I would not hesitate to get it from them...
It works fine on my 2011 - and I'm a REAL rookie at it...

With Ross-Tech the cable contains the license which allows the software to work. So the software is free and you get it on a CD with the cable or you can download the latest version.
unless the 2012 version is a drastically different car that the 2011 ( which it isn't), it should work just fine.

That is correct. The cable is a dongle cable therefore you can use the cable on any laptop. You just need to download the software to the laptop for free as many times as you like as the license is contained in the cable.
I've been using a cable for my diesel VW for years for many engine diagnosing/IP timing/timing belt changes/new key coding/code clearing etc etc etc for years without a hitch. You have no idea how much money I saved over the years not going to the stealerships to find out I have one bad glow plug that I can change in 10 min for 10 bucks.
It will work on our new Q5's. Check it out

The ebay ones are crap and do not contain the license like rosstech's. The RT cable is high quality and durable.
