Roof Rack tent camping

I don't think you want to try roof camping on a Q5. I think the load weight for the roof racks is 200 pounds, maximum, perhaps less. Stick one person plus any sort of gear up there, and really, even if you're 5'2" tall and use a lightweight tent...there's not a lot of safety margin. I dimpled a roof once, just carrying a "reasonable" eight pieces of sheetrock on a car.

I'm keen on this too... seen these pics on FB a while back...
The load weight refers to when in motion.
You can put one of these on top as long as the Mrs isn't sleeping in it while you're doing 90, you should be ok!
I'm trying to convince my wife that this is a good idea with the kids for weekends away!
PS hello! This is my first post!!

I would worry about the glass roof, they're not cheap to replace!! I spoke to Audi about it though, and they didn't seem to think it would be an issue. I'd check with one of their engineers before I did anything, esp as they're not cheap to buy (roofs/tents)!

That's 165 pounds. And there's no mention of that being "in motion", that's presented as the total load weight on the racks. Perhaps that is wrong.
You and your wife would be very light if together you two AND the tenting weigh less than 165 pounds.
The numbers don't add up.

Yep, but it's been done. There are loads of people who have added them. Yakima JetStream bars allow for more weight than the standard Audi ones. The Yakima JetStream crossbars are rated for about 170lbs and the roof tents are around 115lbs. When the tent is open the ladder supports the other half and is weighted for 600lbs.
I'm not saying I've done it, but research seems to show that it is at least viable.
I'd certainly like to speak to other owners and see what their experiences are. I bookmarked those pics ages ago (can't remember where from), and spoke to the owner who said he used it a lot.
@Redd you sound as positive about the whole experience as my wife! Have you been speaking to her
