There are two reminders in the system. One is for actual "service" (oil service) and the other is termed an "inspection" service. Since in many states inspections are done once per year, it's set up by default to be a one year period. Oil service reminders can be set up based on several different criteria but it's usually set up for 10,000 miles or one year, whichever comes first. I'm in the same boat as I put less than 5K miles a year on my S4 but I do have a VCDS setup so I can easily reset the reminders when they do occur.

Thank you all for the replies. It all makes sense now. So along with my laptop, is the one cable described above all I will need? I do realize I need to download the software as well. I love my Q5 and plan on replacing it with another in a few years so this would be an investment in the future.

Default Oil changes are at 10K miles, or 1 year which ever is 1st.

It's in your manual....

Actually, assuming you have a PC laptop with a USB connector, this is the one you need ($349):

Ross-Tech Store: VCDS License with HEX-USB+CAN Unlimted VIN (All VAG)

Audi recommends scheduled maintenance every 10K miles OR 12 months after the 5K service, whicever comes first. I believe the service reminder alert works the same way.

So select the "inspection service" and change the number to reflect your next mileage (for me it was 250 for 25,000 mi) and the annoyance ceases!!

Because the oil in your engine still goes bad after some time due to exposure to moisture and fuel, oxidation, etc., regardless if you drove 5K miles or 10K miles that year.

You need to go to the dealer to get your oil changed, and they should reset the reminder as part of the service.
