I agree I would have picked these up if I was going the 19" way :

The diameter (19 vs 20) only affects the sidewall height of the tire and therefore the ride and handling characteristics. The width of the tire will affect traction and in moderate snow or slush, narrow will cut through better while wider floats on top.

So I am looking at 235/55/19 vs. 255/45/20....

So the 235/55/19 is going to be a much better winter tire? I only give up looks vs the 255/45/20?

Those would be my preferred option.

I am also wondering if we can fit 18"s on the SQ. The tires would be much cheaper and ride would be much better for our bad roads in Seattle winter.

You can get 18" BBS SRs from TireRack with 255/55R18 Continental ContiWinterContact TS830 for $1910 plus shipping after rebate. I'd rather have BBS's then what the dealer is offering you.

Well sort of...
235/55/19 vs 255/50/19
or
235/50/20 vs 255/45/20

To maximize snow/slush abilities and decrease hydroplaning, go with 235s. To compromise and have improved dry and wet traction go with 255s.
