This fact is actually pointed out in the comparison by Road and Track (feb 2015 issue) between the Macan, the SQ5 and the GLA45 AMG. They mentioned that the Macan is the one that got that right in terms of steering wheel position.

Damn. I hadn't noticed it and have found the Q5 the most comfortable car I've owned for long distance trips. Now this is going to drive me and my OCD crazy!

I do think I tend to lean toward the right a little for the center arm rest, or maybe it's an old habit from learning to drive way back when and trying to get closer to my girlfriend in the passenger seat...

The steering wheel is definitely offset from the seat. I noticed it after my first 3 hour drive that my right shoulder would be sore (not sure why on the right). It's normal though so we live with it.

The only reason I ask is that I'd like to see if I can replicate your process on ours.
Felt kind of sore after some long drives at first which led me to "calibrate" my seating position. Center body in the seat, then comparing the center of the steering wheel to your navel. Assuming you're not overly asymmetrical, it doesn't line up by what i guess is about half an inch.

To be precise, i suppose you could take a picture like the stock photo, but line the camera up against the two head rest posts and use a screen ruler to draw the lines like i did with the stock photo.

Incidentally, i'm pretty sure everything lined up in my previous b8 a4. Might be a result of building a chassis for the A4 and then widening for Q5 service.

Regardless - have definitely gotten used to it. So much so that I traded in my 2013 q5 2.0t for a 2014 q5 3.0t.

I noticed it was offset, but all this time I thought my seat was skewed left at the front. I thought that about my GTO/ Holden. It too was built as a dual side driver. It will still drive me crazy cuz' it feels like you're aiming towards the drivers window. Amazing that our bodies can sense a miniscule misalignment. I notice it whenever I'm trying to get comfortable. Thanks for doing the measurement, I was trying to figure out how to measure the seat front to both sides of the dash.

I would not exactly call this method precise/scientific due to camera lens distortion and possibly some other factors, but I gave it a shot anyway, and got a similar result as you did. Then I did the same thing in my BMW, and again got a similar result - about 1/2 inch off.

maybe precise isn't the right word

but what bmw did you measure? Have an f30 sitting in the garage and I have an even worse time getting comfortable in that car. I don't drive it too often but IIRC, feels like the wheel is offset to the left and the pedals are offset to the right. Though it could also be the q5 has totally screwed up my spine.

That's odd. The center of my seat aligns with the intersection of the middle 2 rings on the Audi logo on the steering wheel and that centers in the middle of the driver info screen. All seems very aligned.
