Sway Control When Towing

Airstream indicates a tongue weight of 350# for a bone dry 22' that is properly balanced i.e., no nothing on board except what the factory put there, and no optional equipment. And the Q5 is usually shown as a max tongue weight of 400#, for the factory hitch.
So confirming the actual tongue weight would seem to be first thing on the list.
Then you start drilling holes in the toothbrush handles and buying titanium camping pots for the galley, replace the trailer battery with a lithium one, get rid of the extra pillows, all in the effort to keep that weight down.(G)

This is two posts this week about pulling a 22' Airstream with a Q5. When I saw the other one ( about mirror extenders) I wondered and looked at the specs and found that the trailer would weigh close to 4000 lbs. That IS within specs but I do expect that it will always be a bit tedious. The short wheelbase of the Q5 coupled with the large surface area of the trailer won't help either. I hope it works out for you but I would not be surprised if you have to get that weight distributing hitch to help stabilize things.
Our Q7 pulls my TT ( to track events)on an open trailer great ( about 4500 lbs) but even with the Q7 I would expect a 22' airstream to require one to be a bit more careful.

Independent wheel braking for trailer sway control. I just googled and found this. It might be worth looking into for your Q5 Airstream combo.

You NEED a weight distributing hitch with at least one friction sway control. Sounds like you don't have enough weight on your front tires and you need to push a bit more of the tongue weight to the front.

My two cents
Having all all manner of trailers with everything from a 67 Ford wagon to a 2012 Ford F-350 diesel I would ALWAYS opt for a real tow vehicle. I can tell you from experience that climbing long grades is one thing, coming down the other side is pucker factor. Imho you just don't have enough of a margin.......braking, acceleration, cooling acceleration, it all suffers when you are on the edge.

You NEED a weight distributing hitch AND
at least one friction sway control.
that what we have for our q5 and an AS 22FB
go to a truck weigh station that has triple scales
1 for the front wheels
2 for the back whells
3 for the trailer wheels
do that empoty and also when fuly loaded
you will get to know what is good after a few trips
the scale report should show about 1é3 each
at least one friction sway control.
