Default Impressed how fast 2014, 2.0T produces heat....

I noticed a few days that right after I start my Q5 warm air starts coming out the center vents.

So today I went out and the put my dial thermometer in the center vent and it was 40F (outside temp was 35F). Car wasn't run for 2 days. Started up the Q5, left on idle only, not moving, 30 seconds later temp 43F, 3 minutes later 80F. Now I owned many vehicles in my time, including 5 german cars, and I have never experienced warm air that quickly. When I start at that cold temp and drive immediately it doesn't take long at all to get up to operating temperature(center of gauge), twice as fast compared to my previous A4's.

Is Audi doing some very clever with the 2014's to get instant heat?

The newly designed engines warm up VERY quickly; especially if they are turbo'd. My F150 Ecoboost warms up unbelievably fast. And it helps the manufacturer with emissions and fuel mileage. Nice isn't it?!

The fastest heater in any car I have ever owned.
Love it.

The only issue is when you turn on your seat warmers and then
turn off the car the seat warmers come back on when you turn the car back on..
Other cars when I turned off the car and then turned it back on the seat warmers were off.

Not a big deal...Love the heat!!!!

My 335d has an external ceramic heater built in so as soon as i start it up it provides instant heat. Diesel engines take a while to reach their operating temperature because they are very thermally efficient.

I wonder if the 3.0 TDi has something similar.

On the European market Q5 models with diesel engines have additional electric air heater. I'm not sure for the U.S. market

Default for US TDI, there is some type of supplemental heater

There is an option to enable that in the MMI menu under Car Menu. I'll try to remember to look tonight and confirm.....

I turn the 2 front seat heaters on(low setting) in Nov and never turn them off until April so I like that feature that they don't turn off when the key is removed. All my previous Audi's worked that way.

My 2014 Q5 TDI heated driver seat stays on but passenger heated seat turns off after restart. I wonder if that is a MMI controlled feature?

Is someone sitting in the passenger seat at restart (as they are in the driver) or not? If not, does it stay on if someone is seated in the passenger seat?
