You have to check oil level with engine running?

Spijun, I don't know and get to the point where I don't really care. I know how to get a basic reading when I need to. I can't explain the method of their madness. This is all I need to know:
The engine should not be running...push the key without pressing the brake pedal
The engine should not be running...push the key without pressing the brake pedal
- Engine must be hot
- Hood needs to be open
- Car must be on level ground
I understand this is a good discussion and an opportunity to learn something new
This is the pictures below from the electronic service books from Audi company which are used all over world. Nowhere is it mentioned that the hood must be open measuring the level of oil.
There are also special measures for the oil dipstick is used in service.
I think with your sensor is something wrong when you need to open the hood to measure the level of oil.
Sorry for my English
Best regards

I'd like you to try this on your Q5 and tell me what the result is when you check the oil:
The engine should not be running...push the key without pressing the brake pedal
- Engine must be hot
- Hood needs to be open
- Car must be on level ground

There's a lot more than meets the eye upon initial inspection

Personal preference but I like to keep the oil level towards the bottom of the range because the RS4s tend to "throw" the upper 1/2 quart and guess where that ends up - on the back sides of the intake valves in the form of carbon.
This was discovered when the RS4 was first launched and many or most owners reported high oil consumption. Many of us learned that filling to the 1/2 point on the dipstick solved the problem. Not sure if it even applies to other Audi FSI motors but as long as you're within the range, all should be good so no harm done.

Understand we are all trying to educate ourselves about these new fangled cars !
but have never opened our hood to check the mmi...
I am at a time that I care not to work on cars any longer - they are appliances to me...
BUT I still like quick, sporty, and good looking appliances

It is interesting that you have to open the hood to measure the oil level on the MMI screen
If you can not get the oil level on the MMI without opening the hood is something wrong with your system, that's what I'm trying to explain.
Maybe Audi he forgot to write that has to open the hood if you want to see the oil level in the MMI system ????
I proved this with the Owner's Manual for the A4 and Q5, and what is even more important with electronic service manuals for Audi mechanic and technician.
Good luck
