Kicking too low
I purchased my 2018 SQ5 two weeks ago. Even following all the videos and forum posts, the results have been very disappointing. I have a trailer hitch. Today, I discovered that I was kicking too low. If my foot is low to the ground the sensor will not trigger. If I lightly touch the bottom of the bumper (just to the right of hitch) with the kick, it works every tim

For those with a hitch, you can do the kick motion on either the left or right side of the hitch, about a foot's width in either direction, and it will work flawlessly

I just happen to bring my 2018 SQ5 for service and they applied a software update 51G2. They said it was to correct random opening of the tailgate. I didn't know it was even a problem. I only recall one time where I found the tailgate wide open in a parking lot, I just assumed that either we forgot to shut it or else inadvertently hit the remote. Never occurred to me it might be a software glitch. Hopefully it's fixed.

Just to let you know there is hope, mine has opened the first time and everytime I have used it. Something I learned from my wife's X3 is to make sure your standing back far enough. Don't get too close to the bumper.

I had a random SQ5 tailgate opening. Yesterday, in my second week of ownership. We went to a restaurant for dinner, came out and the trunk was wide open. I'm going to attribute it to an inadvertent fob press in my pocket until it happens again. The fob design does suggest that the button would be fairly easy to press since it's flush with the body of the fob rather than inset. Also you can add my name to the list of people who can't get the trunk to open with the foot sensor until the third or fourth attempt. The tech guy at the dealership said to kick perpendicular to the bumper, between the parking sensors in the middle - he advised against doing the side to side foot swipe that one would expect. I can't get it to work with any regularity with either motion.
