Default 3M

I know many here are XPEL fans. Iíve had 3M installed on another car and had a good experience.

Any specific reason you believe XPEL is significantly better than a product like 3M?

I take delivery of my SQ5 in 30 days and tying up lose ends in prep.

Not sure if 3m has come up with a newer version of PPF but I had 3m on my previous 2014 Q5. It did it's job protecting the paint but was easily visible and over time, looked pretty worn.
Not a direct comparison, but had Suntek ultra installed this time around and if anything, the film seems to look even better than raw paint/clearcoat. AFAIK, Suntek ultra should be comparable to XPEL.
One thing to pay attention to, possibly depends on the installer, but seems the 3m installer for my 2014 used precut panels which didn't cover the leading edge of the hood. Had multiple chips on the leading edge where the film didn't protect.
This time around, the installer did a great job wrapping the leading edge of each panel.

I ditto @userbbc.

I am using Suntek Ultra as well and then had GTechniq Ceramic Clear Coat applied. You won't notice the Ceramic Clear Coat at first, which is a good thing. It's over time when your vehicle stays shiny and new is when you will think back to why you take that extra step. Anyways, in regards to PPF XPEL is slightly thicker which adds more protection and therefore more cost. I think this is the main reason why it's better than most. I also noticed their customer service is a cut above too.

What are typical costs of these films including installation? Also, do they negate the need for wax on the applied areas?

I installed 3M on my 2014 Q5 and never had any issues with it. 3M did come out with a Pro series that I have found is much easier to apply. I ordered my 2018 Q5 with the port installed film which was the partial hood and fenders, complete front end, and rear sill. I'm really happy with the port installed film although I don't know what brand they use. I have not been able to find any flaws in it. I did cover the headlights, mirrors & rockers with 3M myself as this was not available as a port installed option

Suntek Ultra is clearer than XPEL... and that is not subjective.

I am facing the same question soon (i.e. which clear bra to install)... this is one shop's take on the choices between 3M, XPEL and Suntek....

I went with a full front end coverage with suntek on my 2018 Q5 and 3 months in and I cannot even see it. I would recommend it.
