And the fuel filler area holds enough water to fill a kiddie pool.

Probably not the answer you were looking for, but I keep a bottle of waterless wash in the trunk. When it inevitably drips and dries, next time I have minute, I use a clean microfiber, spritz and touch up.

I have the same drip annoyance. I just let it go then wipe with a microfiber towel when it finally stops. I haven't tried moving the mirrors yet, will give that a go.

I blast all those spots with the air compressor. Hit the mirror to door interface at the top for a bit and then the bottom, then top. Same for the gas lid area.

if you have water standing in the fuel filler port area, you need to clean the drain out. There should be NO standing water in there.

I clean the inside after cleaning the outside. By the time I'm done with the inside, all extra water has done its dripping and I can do a last wipe. I used to blow with the vacuum, but haven't found it necessary since I don't drive after I'm done - which would surely dislodge some more water if I did.

I just jump on the freeway for a quick blow dry...and wipe up the remaining water afterwards.

Take it up to 115 mph and the water disappears

Water drips after a wash used to drive me crazy, especially from the mirrors and the door sills, but now I use a small battery-powered blower designed to blow off workbenches and such. Uses the same batteries as the rest of my tools, is light and easy to move around with one hand, and has a rubber tip to limit any damage from contact. I usually dry the whole car to get most of the water off, blow out the nooks and crannies, and go over it with another towel to tidy up.

I use a packet of red herrings to soak up any water, very useful in other applications too.
