CarPlay disables virtual cockpit map

Possible workaround which works for me each time (2018 Q5/Android Auto): Start Waze, Start navigation, stupid compass appears...Cancel navigation (keep Waze open), compass replaced by MMI map, restart navigation, both MMI map and Waze navigation active. Not too bad once you do it a few times.

I haven’t tried Waze yet, but I can have CarPlay nav guidance on while switching to MMI maps in the center console screen, NOT in Virtual Cockpit - it still gets a compass. In other words, when switching to MMI maps in the center console, it doesn’t cancel the nav guidance in CarPlay.

Yes, you are right. I was using CarPlay. At least, I can still use MMI navigation while keeping the maps in CarPlay, so I can still observe traffic information. Hope someone could figure out a way to disable the useless giant compass in VC.

Yes, this is how my 2018 SQ5 behaves. Anecdotally, this seems to be how most 2018 Q5/SQ5 behave. The compass in the VC only appears if you are actively running navigation on CarPlay. Otherwise, the VC maps will continue to display, even if you have Waze running in the background (but not actively navigating) on the MMI screen.
Plugging my iPhoneXS in with USB cable, my experience was MMI nav had map on MMI screen and VC unless I was connected via Bluetooth while also connected via USB. I had to go into connection manager to turn off blue tooth connection (primary phone) and leave USB CarPlay active to get Audi nav on VC.
As far as Waze and google maps on VC while using CarPlay, I’ll have no idea but will try some of the suggestions in this thread. If anyone wants to start a go fund me to fix these issues on the next software update, I’ll be the first to toss in $10 ha. Thanks for all the posts, interesting read, though not very concise lol. This seems to be a major CarPlay issue, I wonder if Audi knows or cares. Or they’re just going to blame google maps and waze etc 🤔
