Default Consumer Reports Rating

Consumer reports just put the Audi Q5 near the bottom of the rankings for compact luxury suv. It gave a rating of 46/100! Must be because of the control module issues. I wonder if this will affect the resale values? I was planning on trading mine in for something else next year

Well, they’re not totally wrong. Parents have a Volvo XC60 which is under the Q5 and we previously had a Q5. My parents and I are the only people I know who’ve had a new car in recent years that’s been dead on the road. Theirs has been dead on the road twice with electrical issues. Both new cars. Friends with Kia/Hyundai/Lexus just add oil, brakes and tires and it keeps going. We had an Acura RDX previous to Audi, did weird infotainment stuff and AC was weak, but no issues that required a tow.

Don’t get me wrong. Not bashing the brand. I love my wife’s SQ5. Really enjoyed the Q5 as well before the engine ate itself. It’s the best driving, most comfortable, best performing SUV I’ve owned. But, it’s going to break. It’s too complex not to. For people who enjoy driving for driving’s sake they’re great vehicles. From a practical, money conscious standpoint the Q5/SQ5 is not the best choice. Muted exterior(which I like), smallish interior within class, costly to maintain, terrible resale value…but a pleasure to drive. The report isn’t wrong, depending on perspective. People purchasing these just have to know what they’re getting into.

As for your resale worries, these don’t hold value well as it is. Especially past warranty, but I don’t think this will have any further effect on that. I’d be more concerned with correction going on in the used car market.

This lower rating may also be due to the engine failures, water pump issues, etc.

I agree with the abundance of tech correlating with impending doom with these vehicles. I am strongly thinking of giving up the "luxury" world of automobiles and settling in with generic brands. To be honest, we have owned several VW's in the past and have never had any big issues outside of some recall work. It wasn't until owning BWM and Audi's that we encountered long lists of problems. May trade the Q5 for the 2024 Tiguan.

I sort of lost confidence in Consumer Reports when they rate the same vechicle from 2 different brands but otherwise identical as one being "poor" and the other "excellent".

Built on the same line, same parts, just different cosmetics... but suddenly the engine is bad.

Is this only the rating for reliability? When I look at the Consumer Reports website, the Q5 gets a score of 71/100 overall

I gave up on CR years ago when they blasted my 1989 Mazda Miata for having a small trunk.
Personally I don't expect a performance luxury or enthusiast car to be as problem free as a Honda, kia etc. That's why I opted for the extended warranty as a form of insurance. To-date though initial quality has been good on my 22 Q5, so only time will tell.

As far as resale impact goes, I don't think CR will be a factor.

I gave up on CR when they drank the Toyota kool-aid.

When looking at the CR ratings I always look at the Consumer Satisfaction rating as well. It seems that a few minor issues can drive a reliability rating way down, it if the Satisfaction rating remains high then the issues must not detract from the ownership experience. I also believe CR rates vehicles more from an “appliance” perspective versus an enthusiast so many Lux brand buyers will have differing points of view.
