Let me see if I can repo what you describe, if so it's a bug I can report to the "right place".
Ah, pulling repos.. good times. I'm out of town on business, but when I get back I'll see if my phone's still have the ''bug" .I have no problem pulling a bug report via the dev options in AA

The "feedback" option in Android Auto's app doesn't provide enough logs generally, you have to generate a phone-side bug report. You sound technical enough, but you can do a Google search about how to enable easy access to taking a phone bug report if you haven't enabled this.

I have just this setup - a dedicated phone in my car that's always plugged in to use for AA. I don't have issues with the battery since I drive frequently enough (daily commute) that it's always charged to the point where it's not a problem.

The telephony thing is a little bit of a pain since I make voice calls from a different phone, but not too bad since I don't make that many calls from my car. I can always just put it on speaker if I want to make a call.

I've done my fair share work rooting/flashing roms/beta testing software Dev options is always your friend, thankfully it's gotten easier to pull bug reports since Android ICS way back . I'll be home tonight, so I will go check tomorrow .
