I am about 1300mi away from my first recommended oil change in the 2018 SQ5. I'm planning to drive about 1500mi between now and the new year with holiday travel. Any thoughts on going a few hundred miles over rec and getting it done next year? Or go in 1000mi early before leaving on the trip? For as much as the full service costs I hate to get in the habit of going in early every time.

I would never allow a new engine to run that long on the first oil change . Do your motor a favour and change the oil to get rid of initial crud that happens with new engines.

enjens, not that I disagree with you at all (I'll stop in the middle of the road to change the oil at the mileage) but you do realize that the manual suggest 10k for first change?

Not to start the ever opinionated oil thread but when will you change your oil the first time?

i changed my oil after about 1k miles. i normally do this with all my new cars. enjens was pointing to the fact the shavings are believed to be mixed in the oil from a newly built engine which could cause issues.

As 2PUTT says, I don't go more than 2000 k on first oil change, I then change oil and filter at 8 to 10 thousand kilometres. Oil is cheap and I do my own service.

I run into this issue sometimes/often. Routinely do two road trips a year @ 4500 miles each and one @ 3500 miles. I prefer to change early even if it appears I'll be marginally late. To me, oil's not something to skimp on.

Went with the preemptive change. I forgot how much better service is at higher end dealership rather than the VW place id been dealing with before. Also, first change was free from Audi.

I did not do a preemptive oil change because I want to see how the engine wears during normal servicing. I asked the dealer to take a sample for me so I can send it into a lab for analysis. If they comply I'll post the results of my SQ5's 9900mile first service.
