Audi Sport's head honcho, Stephan Winkelmann, has announced a new RS-badged SUV will bow in Geneva next month.
A recent report indicates Audi Sport GmbH (formerly known as Quattro GmbH) will launch an additional eight RS models in the foreseeable future. It seems one of them is going to take the shape of an RS Q5, as hinted by the boss of Ingolstadt’s go-faster division in an interview with Motoring. Ex-Lamborghini CEO, Stephan Winkelmann, has revealed the RS badge is going to be slapped onto the body of an SUV just in time for the 2017 Geneva Motor Show next month.
Joining the RS3, RS Q3, TT RS, RS6, RS7, and the R8 supercar, Audi Sport’s new RS Q5 is going to be positioned above the recently introduced SQ5. Official details about what will power it have not been disclosed, but our money is on the Porsche-developed biturbo 2.9-liter V6 set to be used by the upcoming RS4 and RS5 models.
In those cars, the new unit will produce 450 hp (335 kW) and 442 lb-ft (600 Nm) as per a slideshow from a recent dealer presentation. We won’t be too surprised if the RS Q5 will have the exact same engine specs, which would make it considerably more powerful than the SQ5’s 354 hp (260 kW) and 369 lb-ft (500 Nm) coming from Audi’s turbo 3.0-liter V6 engine.
That being said, we are not excluding the possibility of seeing an upgraded version of the SQ5’s 3.0-liter, perhaps with a second turbocharged to bump those output numbers.

Hopefully,
1) It gets the green light for the US market (I see no reason why it wouldn't as America loves pointlessly fast suvs)
2) Audi really does stick to its promise that RS models moving forward will introduced earlier in each model line's product cycle
3) It doesn't have fake exhaust ports like the Q5 and SQ5 do
Sign me up. My guess is that an introduction in Geneva next month means it it won't be available to the US until 2018 at the earliest, possibly as a 2019 model.

From Motor1.com:
"In terms of pricing, the RS Q5 will likely cost more than €80,000 in Germany taking into account the SQ5 starts at €65,790. In United States, customers should prepare to fork out more than $70,000 considering the old supercharged 2017MY SQ5 is priced from $53,300."
Audi all but confirms Geneva debut for RS Q5

My guess is a loaded prestige RSQ5 with all the options will be an $85-90k car in the US, making it a relative bargain compared to the Macan Turbo that it will likely outperform.

Here's another piece of info with details on the engine....
Now to the good stuff: AutoBild is reporting that the 2017 Q5 won’t just make due with a 300-plus horsepower SQ5 variant but an even more potent RSQ5 designation. Under its hood will be a 2.5-liter five-cylinder turbocharged motor with 400 hp. Quattro all-wheel drive will be standard along with a quick-shifting automatic gearbox. The RSQ5 should match up nicely with BMW’s planned X3 M and its near-equal output estimates. The Porsche Macan Turbo will be a close competitor to the RSQ5 as well, so it will be interesting to see how the VW Group differentiates their performance.

I highly doubt the RS Q5 will use the 2.5L 5 Cyl Turbo engine from the MQB platform which the Q5 does not use. I am expecting it to use the 2.9L TFSI V6 Twin Turbo Engine found in the RS5 but tweaked for a bit more torque. It just makes sense so it could compete with the MB AMG GLC63 and BMW X4 M40i. The Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio will also be a competitor.

I don't get it. Of course, I don't even understand the SQ5. Why? I live in the Atlanta area where traffic congestion is terrible. Bought a 2016 S5 with sport differential. Nice car. Fun car. But nowhere to drive it. I can do 15 mph in a traffic jam just fine with a regular Q5. Sold the S5 after 16 months and bought the 2018 Q5. I get the 'S' and 'RS' series if you live somewhere that you can, for lack of a better term, 'let it all hang out'. Of course, if I lived somewhere where it was fun to drive, I'd want the power in a sports car and not an SUV. Just sayin', no disrespect intended.

Let's hope the rumor is true
450 HP+ Audi RS Q5 To Break Cover In Geneva

Not to say one won't come. But VAG are also, particularly now, very sensitive to their margin mix across their brands. The Macan Turbo replacement currently under development will use the MLB Evo platform, and the 2.9 litre TT V6. And they will be able to make at least double the margin on that vs an RS Q5 (on the same platform, with the same engine), particularly in the US. And the US, in relative terms, is more important to Porsche than to Audi (Porsche sell 25% of their volume in the US, Audi around 10%). Interesting to see what they do.

I am looking forward to the Geneva Auto Show this year to find out if the RS Q5 is going to be a reality or not. You are right, the 2.5 litre 5 cylinder engine is a transverse fitment. Audi Sport did make the RS Q3 (it went out of production late last year). I expect it will be re-released with the new aluminium block 400ps engine , but not for a year or so as engine production is already stretched with the RS3/TT RS being released across various markets at the moment. Not bought to the US previously, maybe they will reconsider given the RS3.
