13 Q7 TDI squeal noise under accel
Started noticing this few months ago. Doesnt really manifest itself until you are going >60 mph.
Noise does not increase in pitch or frequency, only in amplitude.
Gets louder with more fuel input.
No it is not turbo whistle. And its not just me as my wife can hear it.
You can hear it while just cruising 70, and if you start adding more pedal the noise amplifies. Almost sounds like a bearing or perhaps a boost leak??
Not sure how to pinpoint it as I cant hear it running the car on the lift, and I cant really pinpoint it while driving or being passenger as it kind of resonates.
Any ideas or someone have something similar?
I cant even capture it with my phone, the frequency gets lost. Will try an external mic soon.

Just a guess but I also would suspect a boost leak squealing based on your description. I’ve heard of a couple of hose and or boost pipe fitting failures. I’ve seen guys bring engines under boost at a standstill and listen for boost leaks. To do so on our Q7s would require securing the vehicle so it cannot move while in drive with throttle applied. Applying brakes on an Audi of course overrides throttle application. Also this can only be done for short periods of time or it will overheat the transmission.

chain it to a large tree or ground and start giving it fuel, nice!
I will soapy water all the charge air connections and see if I can at least see a tiny bit of leak at idle or when snapping the pedal.

Use a STRONG chain. ;-)

take a pvc cap, a lil bit of pvc pipe and a coupler to the size of the turbo air outlet.. install a tire valve stem into the pvc cap and use an air pump to pressure test it.. or you can buy one pre-made: Universal - 2" to 5" - Page 1 - TURBO BOOST LEAK TESTERS
what are the chances it could be tire wear? Have you tried putting it into neutral when your hearing it to see if it goes away? If its still singing/whistling when you disconnect the engine its something downstream.. Transmission/Axles/Diffs/Wheel Bearings/Tires.. if it goes away at as soon as you unload engine then its upstream of the transmission, boost leaks, turbo failure, hpfp, fuel injectors..

Pressure testing with an adaptor. Ive done that several times on my old Mk1 TT. Here’s a video ( not mine)

I have. 14 q7 tdi and noticed the same type of chirp noise under heavy acceleration from a slow speed. It’s a very distinct and loud chirp. Then while driving at highway speed the volume is much lower and it’s not intermittent, kind of like a rattle or chirp. I initially thought it might be a bearing or turbo related. Did you figure your out?
