Android only, but I just bought the cheapest Android tablet on Amazon and was $118 all in with the unit and tablet. Credits are not needed to be spent to apply coding, just allow you to press a button to apply coding without manual input. They were appox 30 credits for $1 and the cost to reset the service light was 10 credits. May have changed since I last did it for a friend's A4, but its not much.

VCDS all day, had one from 01-16 (Golf, then a Touareg) and then upgraded to the newer version (that supports all the newer 11- present cars, also backwards compatible 99-11), I think they credited me $100-150 for the trade (RossTech).

Its value is beyond approach. The headaches solved will make you a believer day 1, you have to use it. Buy a used unit, if you think you’ll only need it a few times. They can be had for $100-150 most of the time, they maintain value.

Penny pinching in this case, will only cost you more pennies down the road.

I didn't want to spend the coin on VCDS so got an ODBeleven. Their CS is unresponsive to even a simple yes/no answer in my experience so far. It seems like it will suffice but I really wish I had VCDS at this point as it seems like the data output is more comprehensive.

You could always look for someone locally with VCDS. There is guy near me who charges $20 for you to stop by his place and use his VCDS to your heart's content. If you only see yourself needing to do it once in a blue moon it's not a bad deal.
