D-n-Tyke

Took our 2015 Q7 in to get clear bra and ceramic coating installed on it by a very reputable shop here. When we picked it up yesterday the door sensors no longer are working (neither unlocking to the touch, or locking by pushing the button), neither is the start button in the center console. Car starts fine with the key in the ignition and there doesn't seem to be any drivability issues. They did say that they had to put a charger on it because with them having the doors open so much they drained the battery. I know that these cars can get testy when the battery is drained so am wondering if that is causing all the issues. I ran an auto-scan (see below) and there are all kinds of faults for under voltage. So what should my next step be? Just clear them all an hope for the best? Or should I take it in and have the dealer deal with it. Like I said, the shop that did the work is standing behind fixing the issue, and even said they would probably just take it to the dealer, but if it is an easy fix and I don't need to be out of the car for a couple days I would prefer to fix it myself. What is your guys' advice?

Leaving the doors open wont kill the battery, it'll shut down before it lets that happen.. but the handles shorting out will..

Clear codes and see if that helps, you might also need a new battery.. 4 years is about average if you live in a climate with real winters.. If they still fault after clearing codes then you'll need to replace the handles or at least disconnect em so they wont continue to drain battery.

Yeah, I am hoping the drained battery had more to do with them starting and moving the car multiple times, without driving it at all (had less then 1 mile added to the odometer). Door handles worked fine before they worked on it so I am hoping they are still fine. But I guess you never know.

Yeah, that is what I am tempted to do, however with the shop willing to stand behind them causing the issue, I am a little hesitant to do that without them still taking responsibility for any repairs (to due with the handles sensors/ start button) needed even after clearing the codes.

I guess my bigger question is, would the stored faults cause these things to continue to not working? If they are intermittent faults, why wouldn't the functions work now that the voltage is back to a satisfactory level (battery is now at 12.4V) even with the stored faults.

if you clear codes and they come back then they are persistent and faulty, you saved the scan and the milage and everything so its not like you got anything to loose.. many things go into a 'safe' mode until codes are cleared,

Could be the key fob battery too. Mine caused similar symptoms when it was dying (door handle button unlocking and push-to-start both dead). 4 years is about right for the key fob battery to die.

Batteries in both key FOBs were just replaced last month so I am assuming that is not causing the issue.

Okay so took It back up to the shop today. We started out by clearing all the codes, no change. So then since the codes directed to the drivers door he pulled the door panel off and verified that all the connectors we connected and fully seated. All connections were good. Still no change in functionality. So made a call up to my service writer at the dealer and explained to him what was going on. He said it is most likely that when they disconnected the handles, with the car battery still connected, that the module lost the calibration/adaptation to the handles. So it should just be a simple re-calibration/adaptation of the system and all should work again. I would like to see if I can't just do it myself and get this done. Only problem is I can't find anything that shows me how to do it with a VAGCOM. Has anyone had to do this after replacing their door handles. I know many around here have replaced their handles themselves. My SW said it would only be about $150 for them to fix it at the dealer, but I would like to have the knowledge of how to do it incase I ever run across this issue again. Anyone have a link to instructions on how to do it?

Hmmm, while I wouldn't normally recommend the dealer... For $150, it might just be easier to pay and have them fix it. With ODIS, they have more options for diagnostics. You're going to be risking paint scratches and all that jazz, pulling handles multiple times, which will out-weight the savings from the dealer if it works, first shot.

I thought I read somewhere when replacing the handles, there are two plugs, and usually they get connected backwards, which is enough to close the loop and not throw a fault, but not correct, thus not function right.

Ya, I had searched around there too. Was hoping it would be a simple find, but as you said, nothing. I don't think my SW is making stuff up. He has always be straight up and very helpful with me. Might just be thinking of a different car.

I had read this also. We pulled the drivers door off and only saw one connector so I got a little confused. I am not sure if all the doors have the two plugs or only one, and we didn't have enough time to tear into all four doors. Do you remember if the thread you are remember specified which door?
