Is there a way to see the fuel economy or trip mpg average on a 2012 q7 tdi? I can only see miles down to empty.

There are toggle buttons on the end of the windshield wiper stalk, try those

I was always amazed my wife's B8 allroad wouldn't display MPH, fuel average, etc. when I drove it...until I decided to read the manual once I got my Q7 a few weeks ago.
The Mode button on the wiper stalk (on the bottom) and the toggle up/down switch on the ride side of the wiper stalk allow you to access all of that info. Not the area I expected these switches to be, but I was ecstatic to learn it was all there (the past 3 years). Rookie mistake on my end, but it's not an intuitive place to put them IMO

Audi is notorious for making something that should be simple really confusing. Took me 3 months to figure out how to get the digital MPH readout. Lol.

if it isn't enabled already you can enable the economy screen and it will give you all your stats along with any options or features that may be consuming fuel and affecting mpg.

Some of the lower end models didn't have the computer only distance to empty display.

Totally agree, I found those figures quite by accident, pleased i had found them, but bemused to find them in such a ****** place
