Upgrade from 3.6 to TDI?
Hey guys,
Quick intro - Bought the 3.6 (prestige s-line) early 2012 as a 3 yr lease turn in and got a great price w/ CPO; expires next summer. 20k miles put on her since. At 52k now.
My wife, 9 month old (another due in Feb) and I take at least 2 long road trips a year to upstate NY from central VA; 3.6 needs at least 3 fill ups total round trip (~$300 on 93 octane just last week).
We love the Q7 for comfort and space (i'd like more power), but in the long run I think the answer is clear we should upgrade to a TDI.
I'm looking at 2 right now, pre-owned. None have air suspension which I'd like to have on this Q, but not a deal breaker if price is right.
2011 S-Line Prestige w/ 44k...priced at $39,100 (private seller)
2012 S-Line Prestige w/ 79K...priced at $41,990 (dealer)
Online, the trade in value for the 3.6 should be around $25k. My experience tells me a dealer won't give me that. Also, I think the 2012's price above is high for the miles.
Any advice or info would be great. Are high miles on a TDI ok outside of warranty?
Thanks,
Brian

I moved from a '07 4.2 to a '11 Tdi. I could not be more happier. I don't miss the V8 at all because the Tdi has gobs of torque. The 8 speed is awesome as well. Just turned 70k and the only warranty work done to date is a new urea injector. I have an aftermarket warranty good for 100k and although I've barely used it, I would not own an Audi without one. The aftermarket warranty on our '07 paid for it's self at 60K!
Bottom line is I'll never go back to gas if I can help it. It's that good.

Thank you for your input. If I had to choose now between the 2 I listed above, I'd have to go with the 2012...even though it has 79k miles...mainly because it has the S-line Plus package and updated interior/MMI features. Dealer says they will put new tires, rotors, pads on, and hopefully I could negotiate an extended warranty. I have to assume 79k miles on a 2012 are all highway.

The TDI is awesome…excellent mileage for something so large, and with the 8 speed trans. it feels like a gas engine model-acceleration is excellent. I average about 24 mixed driving MPG…go for it!! Diesels should be good for 2-300K plus miles easily...

Sounds like you made a decision. I would go for the 2012 too, mostly to have the warranty.
Good luck negotiating the deal and many happy miles with the new car
