Door handles are guaranteed to fail eventually. I've gone through 7 and it doesn't matter if it's the older version or the newer version with the chrome trim. They all die eventually. I've given up trying to replace them at $300 a pop.

Spend a couple of hours removing each door card and disconnect the cable that goes to the door handles. They just unplug easily and all you need is to cable tie them securely so they don't rattle or impede the window opening.
You will need to lock the car using the key remote but you will still be able to unlock by pulling the door handle with a quick 'double-pull'.

I have a 2011 Q7. My first proximity sensor door handle failed in 2014, and now out of warranty, all four failed, damaging battery and requiring costly replacement. Many drivers appear to have been facing similar issues but Audi refuses to acknowledge the problem or issue a Technical Service Bulletin so dealers can do their work. I am looking for others who had similar problems and considering legal action. Please PM me for details.

Thanks for the advice. Actually, it's not a convenience feature that stopped working. The broken handles drain the battery within hours. The handles burned the battery ($750 to replace), and to drive the car I would have to jump-start every morning. I'd say this is not about convenience and had to change all four handles ($1,800). Again, thanks for the advice, and we shall see.

I would go back to the original option then - disconnect the plug to each door handle - this will prevent battery drain.
Certainly, in the UK and Europe there would be no chance of any legal success against Audi but maybe in the US you may have luck. The door handles have definitely been unreliable to say the least!

For what it’s worth, the newer Audis have a different handle that has a proximity sensor to lock the door rather than the push button our 4L Q7s have. I have these on my S5. I’ve never heard of any failures on these. One peculiarity with them is that if you have the key in your pocket while washing the car and spray the door area with water, the doors will lock :-).
