The diesel doesn't need to do as much shifting thanks to the low RPM torque. So, many times it will hold a gear and let boost build and take off. It's a bit like an older turbo car in that sense. When I would plant my foot in 4th or 5th in my old 5ktq, the K26 would take a bit to spin up and build boost. The lag isn't that bad, but coming from a 4.2 to a 3.0TDI, you have to get used to it. Even the "chipped" 3.6 is far more linear in delivery (I have one of those too). But, ultimately 406lb-ft wins every time. I have contemplated having the ECM reprogrammed (I can't seem to leave good enough alone, the 4.2 and 3.6 Q7's were/are both Stage 1, my old V8q sedan was Abt chipped and the CQ is running VEMS on it's 4.2L). I think the '13+ gets to around 300hp and 500lb-ft with most programs. I think people are working on Aisin programming as well.

Running at a constant 78 mph through flat parts of the eastern side managed to squeeze 598 miles out of the last tank. 27 hand calculated MPG.
went from detroit to key west through WV and the carolinas.
Heading to FL was nice, cruise on at 95 mph. Found the trip computer is 1mpg on the high side.

I have the 4.2L in the Q7 and 3.6L in a Passat. The 3.6L is fun with the DSG in the Passat. To bad it is wrong wheel drive though. Did the tune do much for 4.2L in Q7?

I have been thinking of upgrading to Q7 with 3.0T and doing apr stage 2 which gets you up to almost 400hp and 400fttq. Only TDI experience I have had was in a Golf. It was 2011 with a manual. It was horrible in my opinion. Autos seem to be the only way to go with TDI.

Check this Distance to Empty on our 2015 TDI yesterday. Had just filled up after driving home to Trussville Al from Fort Worth. We filled up that morning just East of Shreveport and it was 410 miles home. Filled up again as we arrived home. 13.9 gal. 29.5 mpg. I set cruise to 75 or so all the way. Had a couple of slowdowns for construction. One stop and go for an accident until Waze routed us around it. Average speed showed 71 mph.
furthest I’ve ever dared to stretch a tank before refilling is approx 650 miles but 700 is certainly possible with 50 + miles reserve. The low fuel warning usually comes on after 600- 625 miles at an indicated 60 miles to empty but it will only hold approx 22.5 gallons at that point. Over 3 gallons still in the tank. That would get you very close to 750 miles. No I won’t be trying it

So is the gearing the same on between 3.0T and TDI?

Real world mpg would it be safe to say 3.0T gets 17c/21h and TDI is 21c/28h?
