Default 2014 Q7 TDI S Line Burning Smell and Fan Running

I have a 2014 Q7 TDI SLine and the engine is starting to have a bad smell (like its burning) and the fan comes on periodically after I turn it off. I have checked the engine coolant and that is full (although it does dissipate over time). Is this normal for the age of this vehicle (115K miles)? Also, my AC fan blower (I think) stopped working. I am able to get a little heat from the defroster but nothing is blowing through the vents. Is this the fan blower and would I need to replace the regulator too? Thank you

Did you just get the car? Sounds like your TDi is periodically going into regen after you turn it off. Pretty normal.

Like Kevin said, the smell and the fan coming on after turning off the engine means it was doing it’s DPF regeneration, the fan is to cool down the exhaust components. As for your blower, most likely the motor is the culprit. Easy fix and inexpensive.

I've had mine for 3 years now (Also a '14 TDI) It's got 60k on it now, bought it at 31k.

As others have said, the hot/burning smell means you turned it off during a regen cycle. It injects extra fuel to get the DPF hot and burn off accumulated soot/particles. It will try to do another regen next time you drive it, and if you turn it off before it's finished again, it will repeat until it is allowed to complete.

I have never added coolant/water to mine. It's always been at the full mark. I would check for leaks, check the weep hole on the water pump for residue, I believe that is a common failure point for the cooling system.

My blower motor failed last summer, though it would still run it was making a lot of noise and had reduced air flow. It would come and go, sometimes working fine, other times slowing down and barely putting out air as it was howling and growling. I found the part it self is about $180, install isn't bad at all if you DIY it. I had pulled mine out and tried lubing the bearings, it shut up and worked for about a month before I had to have it replaced (I have extended warranty, dealer did the repair), their bill was in the $800 range with parts and labor IIRC, I paid the deductable ($150) and had them do it because it was less than parts would have been for me.

Big annual service maintenance completed 3 weeks before I drove my wife’s Q7 to work one day and when came time to head back home, Q7 on board computer displayed shut engine off check coolant level. Popped the hood, check fluid and it was below min... so I thought. Tried to restart and gave me the same message. Managed to find a gas station that carried coolant since all dealerships are close Sunday eve. Got home, drove Q7 straight to the dealership Monday morning. Described the issue to the service advisor, paid approx $200 for the tech to drain the coolant I had poured in and replaced with the “prescribed” coolant, pressure checked the reservoir, hoisted up to check for leaks only to be told “not sure” why it’s burning coolant. No leaks, pressure check held and was advised to monitor coolant level and if continues to burn coolant off, may have to replace head gaskets? Can that really resolve the burning coolant issue and what price range will we be looking at? Thanks for any insights anyone can provide.
