Turbo actuator fault P3348 - solved

Thought I'd contribute a little and then post the resolution for all... found the site useful for getting to this point.
Might help someone at least diagnose the fault if and when I get mine resolved.

3.0 TDI MY 2007 Q7

Symptoms:
Limp mode, loss of turbo, engine light
Tested on VAGCOM to see code P3348 - electrical error with the servo which controls the variable guide vanes
No other codes
condition persistent and immediate following first failure

Fault finding observations:
removed heat shield at actuator to inspect
wiring seemed ok, fuse ok, power and control to the actuator ok
turbo control arm moving quite freely - not gummed up turbo vanes
actuator should move with power application and cycle - nope - dead
marked the position of the actuator and removed it - easy job - 5 min. 3 bolts.

popped open the actuator case - see photo - looks like a couple fried components to the right of the E5 stamp (blackened)
will get a mate who is a whiz at electric boards to identify what fried.....
Anyone on the forum seen that before ? Just interested to know if it is a common failure. I gather the guys in the UK who do the reconditions of the component have.
If I wasn't tucked away in a corner of Australia, I reckon I could have sourced a serviceable backing plate to swap and be on my way !

Getting a new actuator fitted at Audi in a week for about $1k.
note - not all dealerships can do that because it requires VAS 6395A - an electronic hand held calibration tool just made for doing servos....
If you don't perform the calibration to show it the limits you will probably smoke the new actuator.
Mostly the solution is to replace the entire turbo with already calibrated actuator $$$$
Hopefully this change out of the actuator alone with re calibration will do the trick...... will report back in a week after the fix.

Update - fixed. New actuator and recalibration. Performing better than pre issue. Proof that you don't need to spend $7k on turbo and actuator. Pic of burnt out component under microscope.
