Default UK Newbie, thinking of Committing....4.2 D

I would please ask for your honest opinion. I have been looking for a Q7 for around 6 months (UK preferably 4.2 D) Budget around 20K.
I have found one fairly local, FASH until 57M then nothing in the service history till 97M - Now 98M. The garage selling stated that it was owned by a mechanic and he probably serviced it himself. I would usually be running a mile however, it comes with a full years AA warranty and breakdown cover. Drove the car today and all seems ok. Have been researching this site for around 6 months, think I have looked for as many issues as I can without the use of a VAGCOM.

The price is 16.5 GBP (2008 98,000 M)
Many thanks for your help and input, hope to be posting more as an owner in the future!

Default until the dust settles

personally I would stay away from the diesel not because its bad but because of the bad press VW is getting even though the revised estimate of cars affected is down to 30,000 from 800,000+.
this is the kind of news NOT reported on by the news agencies.

Adam,
Can i ask why u want the 4.2? I have the 3.0 TDI and its fast enough and not bad on fuel , when u dont boot it..
Love the Q7, best car i have driven...
Is the 2008 an 8 speed auto? As this makes a difference on fuel.. I know its getting cheaper here in the UK..

From what i'e seen and heard the UK market has not been hit by the VW scandel. Prices are still good for all models and Audi sales have grown this last quarter..
Hope u get one.....

Thanks for the replies. Yeah I suppose there is no real reason why I desire the 4.2.
As dodge stated the vw scandal has not had much influence in the UK especially for the used car market.
My main concerns were the fact the car missed the 70k service, this is a biggie as far as services are concerned. Just wanted to know what others thought.

Thanks
AV

I have a 2008 4.2tdi with most options and I do like the car. I moved from a very nice A8 4.2tdi so my move was not really a move upwards, more horizontal, if a little downward in some ways.

I would try get an 8 speed. I hate auto boxes but at least the later one is about as good as it gets at this level and will improve fuel economy.

As for the 3.0tdi v/s 4.2tdi, I never drove a 3.0tdi so cannot compare but I do know the 4.2tdi is fine and can be surprisingly quick but it's not economical - 22 to 28 mpg is a rough expectation when I used to get well over 30mpg from the A8 driven faster.

I would not buy that q7 unless you can verify the mileage and history with the previous owner and what problems the car had. Always assume the worst case for missing history, there is ALWAYS a reason and that is usually not good. Expect keyless door handles to not all work properly, level sensors to fail and possible pano roof leaks - even though it's not been anywhere near the problem here as in the US.
