Default 2017 or 2018 - Thoughts?

Hi all -

I have a 2012 Q7 TDI that I am scheduled to 'sell back' to the dealer this Thursday. While I would prefer to have another TDI, it looks like my only option (because we still want a Q7) is to consider the 3.0L Gas. Several dealers have indicated to me that Audi has 'a lot' of 2017 TDI's sitting at port but there is no guarantee if Audi will ever authorize those to be sold in the US.

I know we are in the time period where 2017 inventory is depleting and 2018 inventory is slowly ramping.

We are looking for a loaded Prestige. I understand the only difference in '17 vs '18 is the soft closing doors option has moved from the Luxury package to the Prestige package.

While soft closing doors is not a must have - does anyone have any thoughts on whether I should buy a MY17 or wait for a MY18?

Thanks all,
-Ryan

I believe there is a hold on sales of the 2018. When that hold gets lifted, the 2017 models probably will go for a larger discount as it's going to be hard to sell 2017s when there are 2018s on the lots. Hard to say what you should do, however, as it depends on the color combination and options you want. If you want a grey Q7 with a black interior, I'm guessing there will be relatively high inventory of even loaded 2017s, so the discounts may be large. For other color combinations, it may be harder to get a discount as there will be less inventory. You can scan the inventory of your local dealers to confirm. There really isn't much content new in the 2018s, so there's no real functionality rationale for waiting for a 2018.

My two cents on this -

MY17 pros & cons:
* pro - available now
* pro - will be priced competitively to clear inventory, meaning strong negotiating power
* con- will be a model year older and lack soft closing door

MY18 pros & cons:
* pro - newer model year, so greater resale value
* pro - soft close door as part of prestige package
* con - will have to wait till hold is lifted

In the end, its what matters to you most. Do you need the vehicle now and so bargain a great price or if you are in no hurry, wait it out for MY18 and pay a higher price.

Good luck with your decision. Cheers.

To highlight the potential greater resale value, you also have to realize that the MY17's have been out for a solid 1.5+ years - so from a supply standpoint, there should be more MY17's than MY18's...but might not matter in 10 years if you plan to keep it that long.

You pay more for the 2018 for those 'included' self closing doors.

I believe the price difference is $425 for a Prestige Q7 (including destination charges), so OP will have to decide if it's worth it for the soft closing doors. Technically the best deal is the 2.0T/3.0T Premium Plus, since you actually save $175 due to the Bose being an included option in the MY18s.

The price of the 2018 Q7 went up $900 + an additional $25 for destination, but Prestige is $500 cheaper. Luxury is also $500 cheaper, so if you select both, you actually save $75. Cold weather is also $50 cheaper overall now that mats are included versus a forced option.

I stand corrected, thanks!

what TDI hold are you guys talking about. The stop sale order for TDI went into effect in 2nd half of 2015. Audi would be crazy to import 2017 TDIs with a hope of selling them one day

Also keep in mind model year ending discounts on 17's on a vehicle like this are not the same as your local Toyota dealer trying to clear out the 45 camry's sitting in their lot. It really comes down to the specific vehicle. Like others have said, depending on when you need a vehicle and depending on the trim / color combo you are seeking will both play a factor. As many of us that already own 17s can attest, if you find the perfect one and it happens to be a 17, personally I would grab it cause the demand vs. inventory does not seem to have changed and will likely carry over well into the 18's. If you do not mind the near 4 month wait (order to delivery) then might as well build your perfect Q7 and get an 18.
