Not TDI hold, MY2018 sale hold. Audi has MY2018 in ports in US, but is not releasing them to the dealers yet. TDI is NOT an option in US at all, and it looks like it won't be for any foreseeable future.

I think you mean 2015. Yes there are many 2015 TDIs in dealer inventory and at port that may or may never get released. These are the older model

At this stage if I were ordering I'd wait to get a 2018 if I could have one in 2-3 months.

I think it depends how many options you will get on the PP. When I calculated it out there was only a $1000 or so difference in price to get the Prestige, vs a PP with most of the same options. But the Prestige had the soft-close doors, ventilated seats, and full LED lights. Those three things are worth $1000 to me.

Also, I twice made the mistake of buying a Toyota SR5 Four-Runner and then Sequoia with every option. The price and options were about the same as the Limited car, but it was hell when I went to sell it, as no one wants to buy a expensive SR5. Had I just got the Limited, the used book value would be higher when people look it up.

So when you sell the Q7, someone will just look up "Prestige" or "Premium Plus." The book will not factor in all of the options you added to make a Premium Plus close to a Prestige in price and function.

I picked 2018 because I wanted the soft-close doors. On my Sequoia, the doors don't close some of the time. I was blaming it on it being designed in California by a less experienced team. But who knows. Even a 1990s BMW solved that by opening the windows a little whenever a door is open.

Also these cars are not without problems, so I think a 2018 may have some updates that are not public.

I have a 2017 Prestige with soft close doors. Nice feature but certainly wouldn't have been a deal breaker.

Thanks all for the informative replies! My wife and I have researched this to death.. LOL. We have decided to go with a 2017. There is a dealer in our market that just received a '17 Q7 Prestige with the exact configuration we desire. We were able to agree on a fair, while still aggressive offer. While I will not have soft closing doors; we felt it made sense to jump on this one and be done.

Super excited to take delivery in the coming days.

Several dealers have indicated to me that Audi has 'a lot' of 2017 TDI's sitting at port but there is no guarantee if Audi will ever authorize those to be sold in the US.

I know we are in the time period where 2017 inventory is depleting and 2018 inventory is slowly ramping.

We are looking for a loaded Prestige. I understand the only difference in '17 vs '18 is the soft closing doors option has moved from the Luxury package to the Prestige package.

While soft closing doors is not a must have - does anyone have any thoughts on whether I should buy a MY17 or wait for a MY18?

Thanks all,
-Ryan

Congratulations on the new car! You can debate getting the newer year model until infinity, at some point you just need to pull the trigger.

Can't say I've ever thought about that regarding resale as I typically check the boxes on KBB when researching a vehicle price. Makes sense that most people probably don't do that.

In New Hampshire, our vehicle registration fees are calculated based on the Year and MSRP of the vehicle. We don't pay sales tax on vehicles but they sure get us back. The MSRP is based off the Trim of the vehicle, assuming no options. The $5k difference between the P+ and Prestige turns out to cost an additional ~$100 the first year. A 2017 Prestige would cost $1300 and the P+ would cost $1195 to register for 1 year. Decreasing to a difference of ~$20 after 5 years for the remainder of the life of the vehicle ($275 v $255). The difference is maybe $400-500 total over 10 years... I think I just talked myself out of that one, marginal difference.
