Default 2017 Audi Q7 road test thread

Hi Guys,

I am interested in the Q7 so I am going to test drive it tomorrow. I would like to hear your opinion on how it stacks up to the competition. I test drove the 2017 X5 BMW today and really liked it. I will give you my report after I drive the 2017 Q7.

I may not be able to find a model with the air suspension so could you also give me your comments between the standard suspension and the air suspension?

Thanks,

Geoff

Which engine did the X5 have? The X5(3.0 biturbo) actually feels sportier. If you like to do drives in curvy roads, the X5 will destroy the Q7(non air suspension) in suspension handling. However, the Q7 is bigger, and is far quieter. It won't feel like it, but the Q7 is also faster, unless you test drove the V8 X5.

If you test drive the Q7, make sure it is the Prestige or at least it has the virtual cockpit.

Of all the SUVs I drove, the X5 drove the best. I'm also a huge BMW fan so for me it fit like a glove. But, its looking very dated, and its physical presence leaves a lot to be desired. The Q7 will feel bigger, heavier, and will drive like it. But you package everything together and I think the Q7 wins. Drive the two at night or when its dark. The look and feel of the interior at night is very telling. The dated interior design of the X5 really stuck out to me. Sorry BMW, I love you but...

Itiongo, I drove the diesel 3.0. The 29 highway MPG really impressed me. The gas 3.0 gas engine maybe quicker in handling, but in the traffic I drive in both will do. The diesel just pulled nice, but was not what I would consider fast or quick, but was more than enough for commuting.

BigKutta, the handling on the X5 was really good. It had the M Sport Package on it. We have really bad roads here and it was still a nice cabin ride.

From the videos I have watched, it looks like the air suspension is a must. I am worried about the long term cost due to the fact I will be buying the SUV and will be driving this car 20,000 a year. Does the air suspension wear out? Someone told me that air suspension can wear out every 60,000 miles. What do you know about it?

Thanks,

Geoff

This is the reason I skipped the air suspension. Two friends with it (not Audi's) had it and swear they'll never get again. Repair bills can be $4000+ each corner. Do you tow a lot?

It depends where you live. In the Midwest, where they spray salts on the road in the winter. I had multiple air suspensions replaced on two X5's and an Allroad.

BigKutta, I never tow anything.

I guess I will find out how the ride is without the air suspension today.

Does the Dynamic Damper Control or the DHP option for the suspension on the X5 have the same possible maintenance problems as the air suspension on the Q7

Thanks,

Geoff

For what it's worth, I have an air suspension on a 10+ year old A6 that has survived winters in Chicago and New York with absolutely zero issues.

I would think if there were air suspension problems after just a few years they would gain quite a bit of notoriety.
