Is the POI or local search powered by google by default or does one need Audi connect for it to work? If there is no Audi connect, what database is the POI search based on? Is it any good?

The local POI database is part of the local maps data from HERE, and they're updated whenever the maps are updated. If you don't specify "Google Search" or "online search" by voice or do an online search in the MMI, you're using the local database. It's fine, but not great and it can be difficult to find things. The Google POI search is completely separate and requires Audi Connect, but it's the kind of search that you're accustomed to on the desktop and is far superior.
