Zero issues with this in wifes 18 SQ5.

The 17 I just picked up is not always connecting to Car Play. Made sure the usb is plugged in, switch the sides that the lighting connector is going on.

i also have intermittent trouble establishing a connection with CarPlay. 75% of the time a simple plug-out/plug-in fixes it, however, the remaining 25% of the time only restarting the car will be the remedy. Help here would also be appreciated!

I wonder if you just restarted the MMI instead of the car it would work. I don't recall how to do it but it's a series of buttons on the interface.

MMI reset: hold Nav and Radio levers forward and then push down the center ****.

It may be similar to this old thread, try to clean up the lightning port and see if that helps:
