Also pay attention to 2nd row of x5. The seats don't recline or move at all untill they add the 3rd row and middle seat was substinally more discomfortable than the Q7s. It would be hard to use it as a 5 passanger car for long trips.

if ur comparing 3 rows suv then it should be a q7 vs x7 comparison. also consider the discount; 12-13% off for 2018 q7 vs near msrp for the new x5

My nearby dealer almost sold out all 2018 Q7. Only 2019 left. Maybe the deal will get better around Christmas?

We came from a 2005 BMW X5 to Q7 2.5 years ago (and the Q7 is going back at end of lease).

In a nutshell, the X5 was a great ride, but as I say "The X5 knew the day it went out of warranty". If I could do it all over again, I would have leased the X5 rather than buy it.
I suppose if you're really good at replacing parts, and willing to spend a LOT of time doing it, you might like owning an X5. Maybe they've gotten better since the 2005 MY...

My advice, go to the Xoutpost forum and look up the "common problems" thread. It was a checklist for us... every single one. We got about 11 years & 110,000 miles out of the X5 before trading it in on the Q7, but I shudder thinking about all the $ spent on it after the 4 year warranty ran out.

Same story here, wife wants a 3 row, so in 2019 we expand the search outside of German brands. When the lease ran out on my A6, I test drove the Kia Stinger, and leased one. I never thought I say it after multiple German rides (VW, MB, BMW and Audi) but others are closing the gap and with the Stinger, Kia has jumped ahead of Audi & BMW in my eyes.

That has to be the funniest thing I've read all year.
Even the "GT2" spec $50k Stinger doesn't have the quality materials and design found in lower model Audi's and BMW's.

This thing has boy racer written all over its design.

What dealer is it? I'm trying to find one with Drivers Assistance, and it doesn't seem like there are any 2018s with that left around me.

The X5 is technically in the same category as the Q7, also the GLE, hell even toss the MDX in there. The are all mid-size luxury SUVs. The X5 can also be spec'd with a 3rd row. The X7 is a luxury large SUV, same class as the GLS, which they both are pretty massive vehicles. But they have they have that true 3rd row room.

You probably can't wait that long, but I can only advice anybody reading this and looking to buy a new (3-row) SUV besides the Q7 to have a close look at what's going to be revealed in 6 days:

2020 Aviator

I'm not having any doubts that this going to be the best US brand SUV on the market.

Test drive one and you might change your mind. The HUD, BSD, NAV, H-K sound system, etc. kick *** over the 2014 & 2016 A6's I leased, and 50K is a list price, they were doing terrific lease deals which brought it down to about 43K for a GT2 AWD.
The Q7 with 30K miles is falling apart on us... little parts falling off here & there.
No regrets here. Auf Wiedersehen Audi
