I tried installing 3M dualock velcro on the back of the Q7 OEM mat but the velcro will not stick to the carpet on the back of the third row seats. There is a different type of felt on the sides of the rear cargo area and the velcro will stick to that.

Dualock is not regular velco though, I think regular "hook" velcro would work.

I tried regular velcro too and it did not work. I cut a slit in both sides of the mat and pulled a strap across to the two anchor point closest to the rear seats. That seems to hold it into place now.

If the carpet's not loop pile, Velcro won't work.

cut 4 small holes close to the farther edge of the cargo mat and attach elastic string. can reinforce with metal holes (not sure about proper name). loop that string over third row headrests. I have seen it in Subaru factory mats. when third row is up - top of the mat is not falling down as it held by elastic string attached to the metal of headrest

Metal holes you mean are grommets. You can easily make your own grommet with a simple tool from Amazon:
Amazon Amazon

I cut holes in the mat and secured it around the metal tie down loops. It still slides around slightly though. May get some non slip cabinet drawer liners. I'm not sure how audi can get away with selling such a crappy cargo mat for $155. honestly want to return it. there should be a 30 day free return policy on accessories.

The cargo mat is the worst thing ever. Not only can it not stay in place, anything placed on it skates around the whole time you drive.
