sorry, maybe is not the right topic, but i was wondering, do you know, which wires are from the light on that upper console?
i want to connect some additional lights, and i want it on when i open the door, just like the light above the head on the upper console, do you know which two wires should i use?

Which step down did you get? And where did you hide the step down?

Dental kit is best tools for removing Mirror trim pieces. I did dash-cam install in 10 minutes micro USB power from the tap.

Then, I discovered, since I have an A5, which has smaller dimensions in every dimension, that the space revealed by the trim is far more shallow than in the Q7. So my initial idea to store my existing DC-DC down-converter (from here: https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/...?ie=UTF8&psc=1 ) in that space would never work.

Someone else on this thread did mention this option, https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/...?ie=UTF8&psc=1 , so I've ordered that much smaller converter and will see if that will fit into that space. If not, it could theoretically extend outside the trim, close to the glass. It wouldn't be as slick looking, but it'll do. This particularly converter has some poor ratings on radio shielding, however, so that will could be an issue.

Hopefully the mirror tap access won't be too bad in the more cramped A5.

EDIT: Here's my version of the large trim piece. Far more shallow than the other pics in this thread:

I used micro USB cable converter as linked below. It's smallest available with right or left angled USB connector.

The space on the A5 does look quite small.

For my converter, I took apart a small (nearly flush fitting) USB cigarette lighter car charger and soldered my own leads to the end. It’s very compact - barely longer than the USB receptacle, and only about as tall as two stacked USB receptacles. And the benefit is that now I have two 2.4A ports for whatever accessories I want.

what is the depth of the A5 shroud? If it is at least 1.5cm, the same approach should work for you. But it does require some (very basic) soldering. If you can hold a pencil, you can do it!

Yes, that's the one. My dashcam is a mini-plug so I purchased the equivalent angled one.

Not a bad idea! I think I might have a very similar DC adapter lying around.

When I get all my parts together, I'll get some better measurements. One other issue is that within the shroud there are a lot of angled components which will take away from the space. Here's a picture of what's behind the trim in the A5:

Behind the shroud

EDIT: Actually, looking at the first pics in the original post, the components look very much the same. Just the A5 shroud is much shallower.

So I'm anxiously planning ahead for when all the parts are here. Asking for some basic soldering advice.

I purchased this pack of mirror taps (not the DC plug which won't work for my 5v USB mini dashcam):

As you can see, the red taps have a male end on the other side. The black taps have a female end on the other side.

The largest is ~0.08 as described in the original post here. It's actually a bit too large to wedge into my mirror plug, but the smaller sizes do work.

My question is how to best connect the black tap female end above to the black wire from my converter:

The converter wires are fairly small, but the black mirror tap female end is extremely small. Can I just attempt to push the wire in there, and solder that together? Or would it work better to use another conductive stiff small wire to bridge the two?
