Default Did anyone try rooftop cargo bags?

Since beach season opened, I realized how little space we get back there with 3rd row up. I was looking into getting a cargo box but it seems like an overkill to spend $500 so we can haul $10 Beach chairs and few additional towels and kids beach toys.

While I was checking online I found some sites suggesting bags in addition to cargo boxes. Some of these are as large as 15cuft, under $100.

Wondering if these are too good to be true, despite mostly positive reviews. I have cross bars.

I’ve had navigator bag for the past 6 years. Mostly waterproof, leaks a little by the zipper in torrential downpours. Use it year around, great bag, well made, holds a ton of stuff, very durable. Have an arksen cargo carrier for it to sit in but i believe you can just attach it to the crossbars.

Wow, that's cool...and has the advantage of folding for storage instead of having to find a place for the large cargo box.

I ordered one of this, but haven't used it yet. I don't have the cross bars. But this stores along the wall and the bag on a shelf so barely takes up any garage space.

Albert, that's amazing, it's pretty cheap too, but somehow has horrible reviews.
I don't mind the leak, I won't be carrying anything that needs to stay super dry, plus we most likely won't go to beach if it's likely to rain.
I just don't want it ripping against the drag or come loose or something. That would be scary since I will be carrying beach chairs, toys, kick board, etc.

Lectoid, can't go with those, I don't have tow package. I didn't install my cross bars yet, but once I get a bag I will. I am worried about the glass roof, I think I will need to secure everything down pretty tight so they don't hop, and have to pad it something just in case anyway.

Hey for what you want get a used box on Craigslist or eBay. I did that and for $200 I have a box to throw the sand filled toys/chairs/towels, etc and used it in the winter for snow boots and boards with no issue. It’s safe, sturdy and quiet while driving at 80MPH.

Hope that helps.

yes I run a thule motion xt box on thule aeroblade bars. awesome for skiing I can fit 10 pairs of skis or so in there. I highly recommend one of the taller boxes if you want to use it for more than short long items (skis, fishing poles, etc.). remember, literally anything can go up there. towels. clothes, groceries (in the winter), luggage, and more. I can get a picture of it and upload soon.

Same setup - love that cargo box ($400 used on craigslist). My Thule Motion XT XL even fit my mountain bike!

Yes, front wheel and saddle had to be taken off but it took a grand total of less than 10 minutes.
